30 Essential Cigars You Need in Your Humidor
Let’s be honest, most “Top Cigar” lists cater to whatever’s shiny, new, and still has celophane on it. Sure, we have a Top 20 of the year as well, but we also wanted something different, something that gives recognition to those cigars that could easily remain on all the “Top Cigar” lists each year.
The 30 Essential Cigars isn’t about hype. It’s about cigars that continually earn a permanent spot in our humidors.
Here’s how it works: Both of us (us being Thor and Fred) pick five cigars in three categories – mild, medium and full – for a total of 30 essential cigars.
No limited editions, no shop exclusives, no unicorns you can’t actually buy. Every cigar has to still be in production and on the shelf. And because we’re not bound by anything except our own opinions (and probably a little bourbon), the list can change whenever we feel like it.
The Essential Cigars List is not about chasing trends, it’s about recognizing the cigars that deserve to be smoked.
Essential Cigars: 10 Mild Cigars

Deliverence Porcelain
(Fred’s Pick)
Coffee, cream, vanilla, and a touch of pepper ride on a clean burn and easy draw. It looks mild but still carries BLTC’s edge. I picked it because it proves mild doesn’t mean dull. It has finesse with attitude, and that mix lands it in any modern humidor.

Camacho
Connecticut
(Thor’s Pick)
The Camacho Connecticut was such a contrast to the Camacho Cigars that made the name. A cigar that helped re-define what a mild cigar was always thought to be.

Avo XO
(Fred’s Pick)

Davidoff Cigars
Anniversario
(Thor’s Pick)
These are top of the line when it comes to construction, but the blending process and craftsmanship are out of this world. There is nothing like a Davidoff and the white label is an all-time classic that would remain at the top of every list if there wasn’t a need to show only what’s new every year. This is a must for any mild cigar fan.

(Fred’s Pick)
I picked this one because it is approachable without being bland, refined without being fussy, and delivers the kind of smoke that makes you light another one as soon as it’s done. It’s a cigar that earns its name, deserves its spot, and shows that “mild” and “memorable” can absolutely coexist.

Illusione
Epernay
(Fred’s Pick)
The Epernay has that rare kind of confidence that doesn’t need to prove anything. From the first draw, it feels deliberate. You can smoke it any time of day and it just works.

There was no way this cigar would not be on my list. The Goldie doesn’t chase trends; it defines elegance. Rolled at El Titan de Bronze by master hands, it’s a study in patience and precision. (Fred’s Pick)
This is a cigar that needs to be in your line-up. If not for you, for the people that you like around you who love good cigars. The Míl Días has personality without ego. It starts with cream and nuts, adds cocoa and spice, and ties everything together in a medium-to-full groove that just feels right. It’s hard to overlook the Davidoff Millennium Blend. Everything one can love about Davidoff. Drew Estate
Herrera Esteli
(Fred’s Pick)
You had me at “hello.” Really, from the first puff, this cigar had a home for me. The Herrera Estelí feels like it was blended by someone who actually loves cigars, not focus groups. The flavor starts clean with cream and wood, then eases into a gentle spice that never gets ahead of itself. The construction is flawless, the burn line steady, and the smoke smooth from start to finish. Every puff feels intentional, like it was designed for you to slow down and notice the craft.

Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust
Mi Quierda
(Fred’s Pick)
Leave it to Steve Saka to make a cigar that tastes like hard work, stubbornness, and pride all rolled into one. Wait…am I describing Steve or the cigar? The Mi Querida isn’t pretty…it’s gritty, honest, and absolutely delicious. Earthy, chewy, and flavorful, it hits that medium-bodied stride where you get depth without punishment. The smoke is thick, the burn steady, and the construction solid.

(Fred’s Pick)
This Habano fits anywhere on the schedule – morning, afternoon, or late night – and never misses. It feels composed, measured, and comfortable in its own skin. There’s a calm energy to it that makes it easy to enjoy but hard to forget. It’s the kind of cigar that proves balance isn’t boring when it’s done this well. (Thor’s Pick)
A sophisticated cigar full of rich Nicaraguan flavors, balanced textures of spice and a dense, creamy body with a strength that allows the flavor profile to take center stage. A. Fuente & Co.
Opus X
(Thor’s Pick)
Unmistakably Fuente, yet so distinguishable from everything else they produce the Opus X has earned its place in history. Ashton
Virgin Sun Grown
(Thor’s Pick)
The Ashton VSG is still a testament to what a great cigar is. It’s been around for a long time so it doesn’t get the recognition that it once did – but it doesn’t make it any less special. Sometimes it’s good to look back instead of what’s ahead – and the Ashton VSG is something you’d find there. This is a cigar that everyone should get into at one point and a cigar that should be in every humidor.

Name: VSG (Virgin Sun Grown)
Origin: Dominican Republic

Davidoff Cigars
Winston Churchill: The Late Hour
(Fred’s Pick)
The Late Hour is what happens when a brand known for refinement lets its hair down a little. It’s rich, bold, and impossibly smooth. You taste espresso, oak, dark chocolate, and a hint of sweetness that feels earned rather than added. The smoke rolls thick and slow, perfect for pairing with something equally serious in a glass.

La Aurora
Family Creed
(Fred’s Pick)
I picked this one because it’s what happens when legacy refuses to get lazy. This cigar feels familiar but never old. It carries muscle, but it’s too well-mannered to throw its weight around. You can feel the experience behind it in the way it burns, smells, and unfolds. The Family Creed isn’t a museum piece—it’s living proof that heritage can still surprise you.

La Flor Dominicana
Air Bender
(Fred’s Pick)
The Air Bender means business from the first puff. Pepper, earth, and a dark sweetness kick in immediately and stay steady the whole way. The draw is firm but smooth, the burn sharp, and the smoke thick enough to make the next guy jealous. It’s strong, but it doesn’t lose its balance.

(Thor’s Pick)
This cigar certainly still reigns supreme as the jewel of the My Father Cigars portfolio here at Cigar Press. It is a full-strength powerhouse that is equally matched in flavor, aroma and complexity. Padrón
1964 Anniversary
(Fred’s Pick)
Come on…how could it not be on the list? It always has been a gold standard of measuring cigars. The Padrón 1964 is cocoa, coffee, and spice run together in perfect rhythm, balanced by that signature earthy sweetness that only Padrón seems to get right. The burn stays straight, the draw feels effortless, and the smoke carries weight without aggression. Every puff lands exactly where it should.

RoMa Craft
Neanderthal
(Fred’s Pick)
The Neanderthal is raw, unapologetic energy wrapped in tobacco (and a lot of it). From the start it’s pepper, espresso, and dark fruit layered over smoke so dense it feels like it has weight. But behind all that muscle is real blending intelligence. It never turns sharp, never loses its purpose. Every puff has direction.
Producer: RoMa Craft Tobac
Name: Neanderthal
Origin: Nicaragua
Wrapper: San Andres, Mexico

Tatuaje Cigars
