Hall of Fame Cigar Accessories Worth Buying
Since I decided to roast the worst accessories last week, I should remind everyone that good cigar gear actually exists in the wild.
Now, before someone comes back and tells me they found the perfect lighter/cutter combo for $3 on Amazon, let me say this. I’m happy for you.
That said, for me, most of the time you get what you pay for. Quality goes a long way.
Take lighters, for instance. I have had hundreds of them throughout the years. In the last decade, I have relied primarily on two. Yes, they cost a bit more…but the search stopped.
I listed the retail prices below, but there are plenty of sales (and re-sales) out there to get the price down.
If you survived the Bed Bath & Beyond cutters, the flea-market lighters, and that one magnetic cigar holder shaped like a dragon, you deserve better. These are the items that work every time, survive real use, and do not embarrass you in public. They are my “Hall of Fame” cigar accessories.
Guillotina de Saka Cutter, Retail $299
Steve Saka built this tank for people who want a perfect cut every time. It feels solid in your hand, slices clean, and looks like something you pull out only when you are ready to get serious. I wanted to hate it (since I’m not a fan of single blade cutter). Right now, it’s the only cutter I use.
Flat Flame Lighter by Les Fines Lames, Retail $179
This is a newcomer and I really didn’t think anything would put me off the other lighter on this list. The flame is wide and even. You get quick toasting with less fuel wasted. Bonus points for the finishing holding up great. Not something I expect, but a nice add-on.
Stage V Clinger Magnetic Cigar Holder, Retail $14.99
This is the only cigar clip on a golf cart that will not rattle, fall, or trap your finger. It grips to any magnetic surface and the velcro lets you strap it anywhere. Simple, one-handed, and effective.
S.T. Dupont Maxi Jet Lighter, Retail $245
Stealthy appearance, an unbelievable amount of lights for the size, and a precision flame. Super classy. What more could you ask for?
Galiner Travel Cigar Case, Retail $200
This one is just classy. It avoids the common “travel humidor that feels like a lunchbox” problem. Holds about 5 cigars and still has a spot for your cutter, lighters, business cards, and Apple Air Tag (yes, I have needed that last one).
Xikar Xi Cutter, Retail $75
I’m not saying this is the OG when it comes to cigar cutters… but certainly has been for the last couple of decades. This design from Kurt Van Keppel & Scott Almsberger in the late 90’s found its way into more pockets than a Blockbuster card.
Colibri Premium V-Cut Cutter, Retail $45
If you want a deep v-cut, this is the one to buy. It cuts clean. Blade is solid and will last a long time. Bonus: It is also pretty heavy, so it might be helpful in a Zombie attack.
Boveda Humidity Packs, Retail $5
These keep humidity steady with no effort on your part. Toss a pack in, replace it when it turns hard, and sleep well. This really should be the first thing on your list if you buy a travel humidor or desktop unit.
Sonic Cabinet Humidifier, Retail $349
So, you stepped up to a tower? Good for you. This keeps large cabinets under control. The system evenly distributes humidity and prevents hot spots. It is a set-it-and-forget-it solution for larger collections. It’s quieter than some of the ‘other guys’ out there.
Stinky Large Stainless Steel Ashtray, Retail $40
Let’s just say it, it might not be the most elegant-looking ashtray, but damn, it works. This thing holds ashes like a champ. The deep bowl handles long smokes. The steel is tough. It does not tip, no matter how wild your friends get.
