La Aurora’s Family Creed: Blending 120 Years of Legacy with a Bold New Future
When the oldest cigar factory in the Dominican Republic decides to shake things up, it doesn’t do so lightly. For more than 120 years, La Aurora has been known for its craftsmanship, consistency, and respect for tradition. Yet with the launch of the Family Creed Series—and its first release, Fuerte Sol—the company is proving that legacy is not about standing still.
Founded in 1903 by Eduardo León Jimenes, La Aurora has always carried the weight of history on its shoulders. The León family’s guiding principles, known as the Family Creed, have been passed down through generations as a roadmap for how to run the company and live life with integrity. Now, that very creed is shaping a bold new direction for La Aurora’s cigars.
“We knew we had to accomplish two goals,” says Ed McKenna, CEO of La Aurora USA. “Develop blends that were appropriate for the developing palates of U.S. consumers, and remain authentic to our past and the roots of the company that has existed for over 120 years. The Family Creed was quickly identified as fertile ground to accomplish these goals, as the literal words from our past could be used to inspire each of the four blends.”

Fun Fact: Manuel Ynoa is often referred to as Manuel “Inoa.” All due to a company typo that has taken hold throughout the industry.
For Master Blender Manuel Ynoa, the creed isn’t just corporate talk; it’s deeply personal. He recites the opening line: “We are a proud family of rural origin, forged with persistent work under a strong sun. Humble and honest people. People who, along with cultivating the land, cultivate love, happiness, and faith.”
“This is the first sentence of the León Family Creed,” Ynoa says.“ And it still holds today. Through this line, we are not just offering a product; we are shaping the future of our company, proving that legacy is not about standing still, but about continuously setting new standards for excellence.”
Breaking the Mold: The Fuerte Sol Blend
If the creed provided the inspiration, Fuerte Sol provided the challenge. La Aurora is widely known for Dominican-centric blends, but Fuerte Sol represents a calculated step outside that tradition.
Wrapped in a Mexican San Andrés leaf, bound in Nicaraguan tobacco, and filled with a mix of Dominican, Nicaraguan, and Pennsylvania tobaccos, the cigar is box-pressed—another first for La Aurora’s U.S. portfolio.
“The way we selected the final blend came directly from U.S. customers,” McKenna explains. “We worked closely with Manuel, our sales team, and through relationships with retailers and fans across the country. Listening to U.S. customers guided us toward a medium-to-full cigar in both body and flavor, whereas many who hear ‘Dominican cigars’ or ‘La Aurora’ might expect something lighter.”
For Ynoa, the project was a creative stretch: “The objective was not only to create a strong cigar, but more importantly, to craft a blend that leaned medium-full in strength. I think we achieved that very well, and with our first box-pressed cigar in the U.S. portfolio, we hope it provides a smoke that invites new cigar lovers into the La Aurora family.”
The U.S. Market: Listening and Learning

Ed McKenna, CEO of La Aurora USA
La Aurora USA was established to directly oversee distribution and marketing after years of relying on a distributor. The move allowed the company to put consumer preferences front and center.
“Having a small but dedicated U.S. team dispersed throughout the country allowed us to iterate quickly on the blend,” McKenna says. “This wide net gave us feedback from a diverse pool of cigar consumers, ensuring it met expectations.”
That philosophy extended to packaging. “We reviewed everything in the marketplace, from simple wooden boxes to extravagant, even gaudy presentations. Referring back to the Family Creed, we wanted to remain humble. The result is a premium presentation that communicates everything you need to know—right there on the box and the cigar,” McKenna adds.
Ynoa recalls the development process: “We went through about 13 different samples and three full rounds of tasting and tweaking before landing on the final blend. Each round gave us a chance to listen to U.S. smokers and make sure the cigar had the right balance of strength and flavor.”
The result speaks for itself: Fuerte Sol received a 94 rating from Cigar Press, quickly validating La Aurora’s collaborative approach.
“You Think You Know La Aurora… Think Again.”
What will surprise long-time La Aurora fans the most? For starters, the wrapper.
“It’s the first time we’ve used Mexican San Andrés for a major release,” McKenna points out. “And the Family Creed brand visually is much simpler. The color palette is humble, understated. It reflects our approach in the U.S. market: we can remain authentic to our roots while evolving for the future.”
Ynoa adds: “The Nicaraguan binder we selected blends beautifully with the San Andrés wrapper, and when slightly compressed in a box-press, it creates a flavor profile and smoking experience that is very new territory for both La Aurora and me as a blender.”
Balancing Heritage and Innovation
The tension between tradition and innovation has always been delicate for heritage brands—but La Aurora embraced it.
“At first, our excitement swung the pendulum too far toward heritage,” McKenna admits. “We realized the La Aurora brand itself needed to remain front and center. That’s why we incorporated the first sentence of the Family Creed onto a wax paper element with the original factory in the background—something never done in our core portfolio. It was risky, but the team in Santiago executed it beautifully.”
Ynoa sees the balance in the tobaccos themselves. “The Dominican fillers are our tradition. The Pennsylvania and Nicaraguan fillers bring intensity and depth. Together, they create something new while still grounded in who we are.”
Looking to the Horizon
Fuerte Sol is only the first of four planned Family Creed cigars. While details remain under wraps, both McKenna and Ynoa promise more surprises.
“Fuller-bodied blends aren’t the only thing popular in the U.S.,” McKenna says. “We’ll continue to explore palates and plan the remaining blends based on research and collaboration, always balancing heritage with innovation.”
“The U.S. team shares top-performing cigars from across the market,” Ynoa adds. “It’s been exciting to study what resonates with aficionados. Expect blends that are truly differentiated within our portfolio.”
A Personal Legacy
For both men, the project has been deeply meaningful.
“The story of the León family and La Aurora needs to be told in everything we do,” McKenna says. “This brand is rooted in authenticity. The Family Creed isn’t just words—it’s a strategic north star guiding both our U.S. and Dominican teams.”
For Ynoa, it’s about legacy: “Seeing the Family Creed Series come to life makes me think about what La Aurora will mean for the next hundred years. With Guillermo León’s daughters, Michelle and Daniela, now active in the company, the future is bright. The Family Creed ensures that the values that built La Aurora continue to guide it forward.”
Final Thoughts
With Fuerte Sol, La Aurora has taken a bold step: honoring the family creed that has defined its past, while crafting a new identity for the future. It’s a cigar that challenges expectations, respects tradition, and proves that even after 120 years, innovation is part of La Aurora’s DNA.
